NYC's Computer-System Cash-Dump Disaster BY GRAHAM RAYMAN

NYCs Computer-System Cash-D... In January 2009, a tantalizing and disturbing comment materialized on an Internet bulletin board about an expensive and controversial Bloomberg administration project to automate the city's payroll system, known as CityTime. The anonymous author alleged that the project was hopelessly corrupt and out of control and had been for years. The writer, who claimed to have been employed on the project, went on to name three people he alleged were responsible for that corruption. The commenter accused a consultant, Mark Mazer, of being "the most crooked person on the team," and said consultant Scott Berger was building a home in Florida at city expense. "Mark Mazer and Scott had ONLY one main in... more >>

Mavis Staples Is for the Children BY AMY LINDEN

Mavis Staples Is for the Ch... Mavis Staples digs her some younger men, but she'd rather lead them to the studio than the bedroom. "I think it really makes for a good record when you get a young head and an old person together," says the Staple Singers veteran (and self-described "golden girl") of You Are Not Alone, her new full-length collaboration with fellow Chicagoan and Wilco boss Jeff Tweedy. A rousing compendium of old-... more >>

Caliu Thinks Small BY ROBERT SIETSEMA

Caliu Thinks Small Next to wine bars, the most popular category for start-up restaurants the past few years has been tapas bars, and the two have lots in common. Offering small morsels of food at inflated prices, both manage to make alcohol the center of attention. Drinkers like it, but then so do foodies, because, in their concentrated goodness, the petite plates often feature big flavors. The modest portions coul... more >>

Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet: Superhero Slob BY J. HOBERMAN

Seth Rogen as the Green Hor... Only inertia will bring people to Michel Gondry’s 3-D spectacle, The Green Hornet. Opening amid persistent negative buzz in the mid-January dead zone, this long-germinating prospective franchise, based on a character that first saturated the nation’s radio waves in 1939, seems pretty much DOA—although in the absence of any competition, it’s a likely magnet for loose cash. Blind Items! Blind Items! Blind Items! BY MICHAEL MUSTO

Blind Items! Blind Items! B... Which rock-star survivor is in a relationship with that weird lady mainly because she helps hook him up with younger women? Which Oscar-nominated Brit with a large penis is basically a leather queen who cuts quite a swath in his head-to-toe biker drag? Which enduring TV star is a big lesbian, the public love of her life having actually been a closeted queen who routinely hired hustlers? Which sup... more >>

'Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures'—A MOMA Film Fest Without Any Popcorn BY R. C. BAKER

Andy Warhol: Motion Picture... Considering the velocity of our digital age, it can seem an eternity to hold a smile for the few seconds a friend might fiddle with iPhone settings before taking your picture. Now imagine it's the '60s, and you're staring into a 16mm Bolex for three minutes straight while 100-foot reels of silent black-and-white film clack through the shutter. In 1963, as Andy Warhol's notoriety for painting Cam... more >>
