| Vintage Pictures of Kids Playing Sports Posted: 04 Feb 2011 04:57 PM PST In honor of this weekend’s Super Bowl, we bring to you vintage shots of children playing sports. After all, becoming a professional sports athlete is something that dreams are made of. And while not every child has what it takes to become the next Michael Phelps, Sidney Crosby, LeBron James, or Tim Lincecum, it doesn’t mean they can’t try. And try they do, because, like most things, every dream has to start somewhere. T-Ball
(source) Playing catch in the backyard with Dad is one of the first memories many kids in America have as participants in the nation’s favorite past-time. Luckily, being thrown out at first base in their first T-Ball game isn’t. Street Hockey
(source) When lakes and rivers finally begin to thaw out across the Midwest, hockey games usually have to be moved indoors; but not for these kids. They’ll be able to play outside all summer in their street hockey gear. Check out those pads! Baseball (Havana, Cuba)
(source) When walking around the streets of Cuba, it’s extremely likely one will pass kids playing baseball in the alleys. Cubans love the game, and it shows in some of the great players that they’ve been able to produce—Jose Canseco and Rafael Palmeiro, to name a few. Vintage Swimming
(source) One of the greatest things anyone can learn when they’re young is how to swim. Not only is it good exercise, but it’s an amazing thing to do on a hot summer day. Thankfully, swimsuits have evolved over the years to actually allow for tan lines. Girl Pitcher
(source) This girl obviously didn’t get the memo that girls can’t play baseball, and neither did her idols, who formed the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943. Their devotion to the sport inspired the popular movie, A League Of Their Own, starring Tom Hanks. Kid Playing Hockey
(source) Parents love these photo-ops, as they allow them to capture the moment when the love of the game originated. Kids aren’t so happy though, because it means they have to stop doing what they love for a second while the photo is snapped. Vintage Basketball
(source) Back in the day, basketball shorts were short, and the shoe of choice was the Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars. It’s amazing to see how far the game has progressed over the past few decades, just when it comes to uniforms. Old Time Field Hockey
(source) Field hockey originated in English public schools in the early 1900s. The game was taken to India by British servicemen and their families, which is where the group shown above was playing. The rules of the game are similar to ice hockey, but it’s played on grass and uses different shaped sticks. Kid With Baseball Bat
(source) Baseball isn’t really the type of game you can play alone. After all, you need someone to pitch the ball, or at least have someone who’s willing to help chase down the hit. Perhaps this boy trained his dog to fetch, so he could enjoy hours of practice when his friends couldn’t play? Roller Skate Hockey
(source) Before the invention of rollerblades in the ’80s, kids had to make due in the summer by playing hockey in old fashioned roller skates. The turning radius left something to be desired, but that didn’t stop kids from gathering at the skate rink for a game. Old School Skateboard
(source) Skateboarding really took off in the ’70s, as kids in Southern California pushed the limits of what was thought to be possible. Then came along new boards, trucks and wheels, that not only changed how kids could skate, but where. Whoever thought an empty swimming pool would be a skate park? Retro Kids Sports Team Photo
(source) Remember when every sports coach (and Dad) wore a mustache and short shorts? Well these kids do, because they had the short shorts to match. If only they were wearing mustaches… Vintage Roller Skates
(source) Yes, there was a time when everyone wore leg warmers. It was 1983, when it was also cool to practice one’s favorite ice skating moves on a roller rink. Today’s “cool” standards seem to have shifted, requiring sports to be labeled as “action” or “aggressive” in order to be considered. AYSO
(source) Since its inception in 1964, AYSO has grown to include over 50,000 teams and 650,000 players, all supported by 250,000 volunteers. The league was founded based on six philosophies: everyone plays, balanced teams, open registration, positive coaching, good sportsmanship, and player development. Oh, and it also helped produce the term “soccer mom” and perhaps helped with the sales of countless minivans across the country. Kids Swimming (Havana, Cuba)(source) All a swimmer used to need was a suit and a pair of goggles. But, in recent years, there’s been a shift in suit technology. Speedo developed its LZR suit, constructed of high-technology swimwear fabric of woven elastane-nylon and polyurethane. The line was launched in February of 2008, and, within a week, three world records were broken.
