Heroin.com: Selling Junk Online BY DAVID SHAPIRO, JOE COSCARELLI

Heroin.com: Selling Junk On... In 2008, New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan began leading a team of undercover investigators targeting the drug dealers who used Craigslist to advertise their wares. She sounded confident. "It's like shooting fish in a barrel," she told the Daily News. That year, a Citigroup vice president, Mark Rayner, was caught moving ecstasy and cocaine from his Midtown offices using Craigslist. "We see lots of professionals, people with good jobs, doing it," Brennan said. Three years later, drug dealing on the classified-ads website is still blatant and ubiquitous. Sellers thinly camouflage their activity by posting ads for "420 T-shirts" or "tickets to the 420 show," usi... more >>

tUnE-yArDs Raises Her Voice BY MIKE POWELL

tUnE-yArDs Raises Her Voice The first voice you hear on w h o k i l l is an old woman's: "Ladies and gentlemen, Merrill is . . . performing at the . . . ," she says, stumbling over her words before being interrupted by the thump of a drum. Then comes the thump of a second drum. And on top of the second drum, a third: three drums, thumping in unison, quickly. Then comes Merrill Garbus, already kicking: "My country, 'tis of t... more >>

Yi Lan Halal Restaurant--on the Lamb in Flushing BY BY ROBERT SIETSEMA

Yi Lan Halal Restaurant--on... Flushing's Yi Lan Halal Restaurant is New York's first real Muslim Chinese establishment. While the city has seen plenty of Halal East Asian food (such as Brooklyn's No Pork Chinese Kitchen), these places merely reconfigure Cantonese fare for observant devotees of Islam. By contrast, Yi Lan represents the cooking of the Muslim population of northern China. It resembles restaurants I've eagerly so... more >>

Better Movies, Less Hoopla--Tribeca Finds Its Footing BY ERIC HYNES

Better Movies, Less Hoopla-... At first it was about neighborhood. Then it was about stars, parties, and supersizing. But finally, for its 10th incarnation, the Tribeca Film Festival (April 20–May 1) seems to be about movies. Gone are the superfluous, attention-sucking Hollywood premieres (Tom Cruise on a Jet Ski, anyone?), and few are the big-name, low-quality vanity projects. Several years into a vital slimming of the s... more >>

Kelly McGillis on Coming Out, Shame, Religion, and Vampires BY MICHAEL MUSTO

Kelly McGillis on Coming Ou... Kelly McGillis shot to fame in 1980s blockbusters like Witness, Top Gun, and The Accused, serving fierce hair and the requisite attitude. After a 10-year hiatus, she's back in Stake Land, a spare and arty horror flick with minimal dialogue ("Stake the bitch!") and Kelly cutting an imposing figure as a nun running from both vampires and a Bible-thumper out to jumpstart a gang-rape. Meanwhile, he... more >>

Cameron Hayes at Ronald Feldman BY ROBERT SHUSTER

Cameron Hayes at Ronald Fel... Dystopian visions don't get much darker than those of Cameron Hayes. Influenced, it would seem, by Hieronymus Bosch, underground comics, and Richard Scarry's cluttered drawings for kids, the Australian artist paints meticulously detailed panoramas of urban mayhem. From afar, these sprawling cityscapes present loose organizations of motion and color, with cartoonish figures engaged in some vague c... more >>
